MVME2100 CPU board

Description

Preparing a new MVME2100 board The MVME2100 has 4Mb of Flash EPROM soldered to the CPU board as well as 1Mb of Flash EPROM in two sockets. This document explains how to copy the vxWorks ROM boot image into the soldered Flash and use this for booting (CPU access to the socketed flash is slower than to soldered flash, which is why we do it this way round). The socketed Flash should never be reprogrammed or you’ll lose the ability to reprogram either flash bank again (as long as you don’t mis-type any of the instructions below this won’t happen).

First we have to set up the board jumpers. The only relevent jumpers are J2 = System controller, and J9 = Flash bank selection. The MVME2100 has an “automatic” system controller mode set as the factory default, which means that it’s unlikely you’ ll ever need to change the J2 setting from connecting pins 2 and 3 (J2 is near the top edge of the board above the heatsink – that’s for the CPU chip by the way, which also contains the memory controller, PCI-bus interface logic, interrupt controller and system timers).

To program the vxWorks boot code into Flash EPROM you need to set jumper J9 (bottom edge of the board, nearest the J2 VME connector) so that pins 1 and 2 are not connected (this may be the factory default setting). This will cause the CPU to boot into PPC5-BUG from the 1Mb of socketed Flash. Having set J9, insert the board into the VME chassis, and make sure you do not have a transition module or doodle board plugged into the backplane at this slot. You will need an RJ45 serial connector, but if not available you can use an APS MVME172 doodle board and a double-ended RJ45 cable to convert to a DB25 socket. Connect the network to the “10/100-BASE-T” connector on the front panel, and the console serial line to the “DEBUG” connector, then power up the VME chassis.
